Endocrinology is all about hormones, which are naturally produced chemicals that influence the way our bodies work. When a hormone goes wrong (usually when the body produces too much or too little), then the part(s) of the body linked to that hormone starts to work incorrectly and, as a result the person becomes unwell. People can be born with a hormone problem (this is called a congenital problem) or can acquire a hormone problem at any age. Because a single hormone can influence many parts of the body, the symptoms and signs of a problem may be difficult to pick up on.
