An excellent study from the New England Journal of Medicine shows that even with optimum diabetes control (ie as low blood glucose levels as possible), the risk of developing heart problems as an adult is double that of people without diabetes. This is really important. Unlike patients with type 2 diabetes, those with type 1 diabetes generally do not have obesity, hypertension, or high cholesterol levels. Therefore this increased risk of death from heart problems is unexplained. Here is the link; http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1408214.
